The video speaks for itself. The only variations I would suggest are: (i) attach the crowns to the King's and Queen's heads by inserting a toothpick axially through the crown and can and securing it in place with a toothpick nut straw-nut; (ii) you can make the bishop taller by keeping more of the upper part of the can on each segment, like you see in the photo; (iii) use smaller and more attractive rubber bands than the ones I used; and (iv) tape the "collars" in place using only one layer (instead of wrapping the entire top around your finger like I did).
You can use flat checkers pieces (see extracting the disc) with printed images to make a chess board that fits a large rubber chess board.

Print the pdf document out at ACTUAL RESOLUTION, in a 1-to-1 ratio, from your printer. You'll need to look in the pdf print menu to delete the scale-to-fit feature.
Regrettably, I was unable to find a chess board that fit full-can-sized chess pieces.
Here's an alternative configuration for the body of the queen, shaped like an hourglass. It's made by curving-in the sides of a 16-slice can.
To do that, pull the 16-slice can from both ends as you gently and carefully deform-in the middle by forming a ring around the center with your thumb and index finger. After the initial curvature is set, you can then deepen the curvature by twisting the ends slightly in opposite directions simultaneously.
